Melissa Bajric | working on a new album; and appearing at Easter,
at Poley’s Place to celebrate its 30 years

When the Darkest Hours Pass  #41 CMC Top 50

Looking forward to a popular Easter gig set amongst some of the most picturesque of New South Wales highlands, Melissa Bajric heads at the end of the month to the Barrington countryside to Poley’s Place.  The event celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this Easter, establishing many careers and a launch pad for budding performers over the years, just like Melissa.  it’s a favourite place for her to meet up with locals, other artists and musicians over the four day long weekend.

Fresh from the studio, adding finishing touches and last tracks to a new album, Melissa is also enjoying the audience reaction she’s receiving for her latest clip ‘When the Darkest Hours Pass’.

Filmed in Newcastle early this year, the track ironically not from her current album, but a previous album, is currently at 41 on Top 50 CMC charts, entering the charts four weeks ago.

You can see Melissa at Poley’s Place, in the idyllic rural surrounds of Thunderbolt’s Way at Barrington in NSW.  Melissa appears alongside Col Hardy, Bob Easter, Jason Lee, Ann Lowe, Ian Hands & Zeta Burns and other guest artists at the 30 Year Anniversary over the Easter Long Weekend.

Album Review  |  Country Jukebox, Germany

MAX W ACHATZ  Country Jukebox, Germany

                        countryjukebox.de

In a rural environment where the waters run clear, and breeding youthful innocence; a small village in the vineyard region of the Hunter Valley in New South Wales was the place of birth and growing up of singer and songwriter Melissa Bajric.

The pretty 24 year old is seen on the cover of her latest album, the title of which is aptly called "Small Town Girl". A first impression is confirmed by 12 predominantly excellent, wonderfully melodic and touching songs; presented in a marvelous and disciplined manner by the young Australian. These are done sometimes thoughtfully, sometimes dreamily, sometimes in sad ballad style; but always genuine and natural, perhaps even a little too so for some with less traditional tastes.

After her debut album Believe In Me (2001) and the popular duets album Drovin' All Over (recorded with the two Australian country music veterans Bob Easter and Graham Rodger in 2003), comes Melissa's third album Small Town Girl. Following her successes in her homeland, the award-winning singer released her first international single "Blue Mountain Melody" - a solid and relaxed, Pedal Steel, Fiddle, and Mandolin dominated country song that has captured the hearts now of country music fans from outside of "Down Under".

Besides the title track, and the light-hearted sounds of the flattering "Luckiest Girl", Bajric puts forward three more self-written compositions, "Morning Bird", "Listen To the Rain", and "Little Girl In Me"; on this her third album produced by master of country guitar Lindsay Butler.

The pace picks up with "Truck Drivin' Man", not the well known Terry Fell trucker classic of Dave Dudley, but a work of the Australian singer / songwriter Norma O'Hara Murphy. With the Red Lane and Melba Montgomery composition "Sunshine Rain", a tastefully unobtrusive number, the listener is instantly reminded of the post-war style songs of The Judds; and from the repertoire of the Louvin Brothers comes the sensitively sung, little known country ballad "Are You Wasting My Time".

Small Town Girl is an album exactly catering to the tastes of country traditionalists who prefer the somewhat relaxed and quiet approach in their music. Melissa Bajric is not only talented and skillful, she has a beautiful voice, writes just as beautiful country songs, and puts her heart and soul into her music. What is currently missing though is a few crisp up-tempo pieces, with which to provide the essential alternation in her offering. A well-intentioned piece of advice that could soon be fulfilled, as we hear that a new album is already in production, and hopefully a release will follow in the not too distant future.

MEDIA RELEASE

Melissa Bajric |When the Darkest Hours Pass in CMC Top 50

‘When The Darkest Hours Pass’ is the newest work for Hunter Valley artist Melissa Bajric.  It’s the latest soundclip under the creative direction of 171 Entertainment, and video producer Ross Wood.

Effectively working backwards in time, ‘When The Darkest Hours Pass’ is from Melissa's 2001 debut album ‘Believe In Me’.

‘The decision wasn’t difficult’ Melissa’s management says ‘The track had a certain quality about it.’

‘An assumption that it held potential for a clever adaption to video, and one that Ross has captured impeccably;  an understated emotion of everlasting love; a broad and easily credible Aussie generic quality, befitting the elderly couple’s attachment for each other, he deceased and waiting for her. ‘

‘There’s a three year working association with Ross, first working on Melissa’s initial clip her self-penned ‘Luckiest Girl’, and consecutive clips, a second single ‘Too Long Between Drinks’ from her latest album, and the remake of the Red Lane|Melba Montogomery ‘Sunshine Rain’ a hit previously in Australia for Jean Stafford in the late 80’s.’

‘His inexplicable creative sense instinctively captures what it is Melissa finds in a song, and knowing she’s in his capable hands, the rest simply ‘works’. ’

Professional actors were used for the first time.  Shot on location at an old house in the Warnervale area on the NSW Central Coast, filming took two days.

He added ‘This is the first clip of Melissa's that Ross has used actors in.  Interestingly, we worked out recently that this is Melissa's fourth clip, all completely different.  Every clip created with a focus and a methodology that's unlike each of the others.’

A Top 50 new addition, When the Darkest Hours Pass enters the charts at 49 this week.

Sunshine Rain in CMC Top 50 for the last month

Newest film clip Sunshine Rain | CMC Top 50

Too Long Between Drinks on latest NfS | NfS 131 Track 15

The album, Smalltown Girl has produced a couple of great tracks for Melissa Bajric. Not least of all, Blue Mountain Melody’s airplay in the UK & European sector, while here in Australia, the self-penned Luckiest Girl registered good rotation in the southern states on radio and television, pay-tv and community channels.

This week, the third single Sunshine Rain another remake of a Jean Stafford hit, has had a six week long run in the CMC Top 50 charts. Produced by Ross Wood, and filmed on location at a majestic old terrace house in Cooks Hill in Newcastle in early April, the clip aired in late May after landing in the new additions programming.

Melissa’s held her own, steady in the month at 45, 49, 46 and 47 over respective weeks, and still there at 50 in this week’s charts.

The news caps off an otherwise hectic month in June with stage performances at Bluewater Festival’s Port Stephens Winery in early June and weekend gigs in Rockhampton and Bundaberg. It’s big news for the petite singer from Maitland in New South Wales.

Melissa appears at Lord Howe Island in August, resuming the Queensland tour with confirmed dates in Townsville and Mackay in September.

Sun shines for Melissa

Newest film clip Sunshine Rain | airs on CMC

Too Long Between Drinks on latest NfS | NfS 131 Track 15

Melissa Bajric’s third single Sunshine Rain a remake of the Jean Stafford hit was filmed on location at an old terrace house in Cooks Hill, a suburb of Newcastle in early April.  The clip aired on CMC over the weekend.

Melissa says she fell in love with the song from the very first time she heard it on a Jean Stafford CD.

‘It's one of those songs that never ages and with the mix of old and new songs on my last album it just suited perfectly. In the studio there are always a few special moments while recording and this song was one of them for me. It just felt right and from the very beginning, everything just seemed to work.’

‘I knew Lindsay was going to do something really great with the production and when I heard the final mix I was so excited and couldn't wait for people to hear it, and I KNEW that Ross Wood was going to be the perfect video producer for this clip.  When he told me his ideas I couldn't wait to film. On the day of filming, the location was like stepping onto the set of a fairy tale, everything was so pretty. The whole house has so many beautiful things in it and is furnished in a beautiful white and pink theme. It was a really fun day.’

Sunshine Rain on CMC, follows quickly on the heels of her latest NfS release Too Long Between Drinks.

Radio presenters and pay television won’t be the only ones having a lot of fun with both tracks from her current CD Small Town Girl.  Melissa’s management soon found out what it was like keeping up with the inventive producer on the set.

‘Prior to the shoot Ross kept mentioning an idea he had about scenes through glass with water running over it, and although we couldn't quite picture it he continually maintained that he had a clear vision of it and how it would work.  You have to trust the bloke, don't you?’ he joked.

When we arrived he opened the boot of his car to reveal the ‘props department’, which consisted largely of a sheet of glass about 1metre square housed within an old metal frame; and he then promptly gave me the job of cleaning the glass. He said he wanted a rustic effect, so not to make the whole sheet of glass too clean… shooting that scene was an all in effort from there on, on the upstairs balcony of the terrace house, with me holding the sheet of glass at a particular angle so as to reflect the leaves from the trees opposite; with Ross then sprinkling water from a watering can over the glass - dropping the watering can and starting to shoot - stop shooting and more water - drop the can and shoot some more etc.

‘Well, you see what you think for yourself; the bloke's brilliant!’

Double whammy for Melissa Bajric

Too Long Between Drinks on latest NfS | NfS 131 Track 15

Newest film clip Sunshine Rain airs last Saturday on CMC

Multi-award winning singer/songwriter Melissa Bajric has carved her mark in Australian country music.  Small Town Girl, Melissa's latest album produced impeccably by Lindsay Butler, has shown this young lady at her very best, with five of her own compositions including the TSA award-winning song Little Girl In Me, and several successful singles.

During 2008 Melissa released her first track to international radio with resounding success. Blue Mountain Melody spent 16 weeks in the European Top 100 charts and hit the ECMA National Top 10 in several countries.

Melissa is currently working on her 4th album which is planned for release during 2009. Too Long Between Drinks, an Alison Christopher original, is Melissa's latest radio single; and you can also see the fun light-hearted film clip to this track on CMC

Profile: NfS 131

The video prequel to the radio single released last month, ‘Too Long Between Drinks’ Melissa’s second video clip, was filmed late last year.  It follows the successful 2007 release to radio and television of ‘Luckiest Girl’ from Melissa’s latest album ‘Small Town Girl’.  The more recent third clip ‘Sunshine Rain’ filmed just a few weeks ago, aired this last weekend on CMC.  All three clips produced by Ross Wood.

‘Our location was this amazing little church that had been converted into an art studio.’ Melissa says.

‘When Ross first suggested a church for a song called ‘Too Long Between Drinks’ I have to admit I was a little nervous, but as he continued and told me more about it the location sounded great and he was spot on.  It was the perfect location.’

Melissa Bajric a favourite in Scotland

Blue Mountain Melody  HILLCREST 40

Australia’s petite young singer Melissa Bajric from the Hunter Valley in the heart of New South Wales vineyards, releases her first international track to radio this month and already she’s captured the ear of Scotland.  Peggy MacNeil who broadcasts from Isles FM, located amongst a group of islands north west of the Scottish mainland, was duly impressed by Melissa’s version of the old bluegrass favourite ‘Blue Mountain Melody’, released this month by Canadian distributors Hillcrest on CD40.

A million thanks for CD 40 which arrived in my hands about an hour and a half ago and needless to say I had to drop what I was doing and just sit down and listen. It is just superb and what a range of artists from all over - very well produced indeed.

My favourite this time is Melissa Bajric from Australia but that was a hard decision to come to.

Lindsay ‘Waddo’ Waddington Guitarist to Hunter Valley Singer|Songwriter Melissa Bajric

A chance discussion with LBS Music producer Lindsay Butler, changed the course of touring arrangements for Hunter Valley singer|songwriter Melissa Bajric.

While having dinner with Lindsay and Shaza one evening a few months back, Lindsay made the comment that Melissa really should have her own guitarist for gigs, appearances and interstate touring, suggesting that she look for someone who knew her work.

Melissa’s management also agreed, considering that although many of the bands at shows are exceptionally good, it's rare that they'd know any of Melissa's material, so consequently she would tend to primarily do covers.

They added ‘Lindsay's belief is that she needs to and deserves to be able to perform her own music when doing any show.  As most people know Lindsay is a man of comparatively few words, so when he speaks of matters for Melissa's benefit, then we listen’.

The answer was relatively easy when it came to a possible selection.

‘I came to the conclusion that the next best thing to Lindsay who is a master of his art is the master's apprentice, so it followed that I should approach Lindsay Waddington’ Melissa said.

Three times Queensland Musician of the Year Lindsay Waddington lives on the Gold Coast, while Melissa lives in the Hunter Valley, a seemingly impossible and definitely impractical alliance.

However with the cost of airfares as low as they are today, Melissa almost exclusively flies to shows in other states now herself, and so it's just another low cost airline ticket to get Waddo to any show in Australia with her.

Luckiest Girl Melissa Bajric

How lucky is Hunter Valley songwriter Melissa Bajric!

A TSA award winner in January the petite ballad singer had a helping hand and possibly some natural intervention some may think from above when the original date for filming of her latest single changed.

The clip was originally due for shooting on the day that the horrendous deluge causing the Hunter flooding began.

Dealing with the task at hand and too busy to change locations Melissa organised with video producer Ross Wood to reschedule to the next available date – July 13 which just happened to be Melissa’s birthday.

Shot in Maitland and Morpeth the Lindsay Butler produced single Luckiest Girl was written in 2005 by Melissa when she started putting material together for her album. She says ‘Luckiest Girl’ is a song about life on the road. I practically wrote it as I grabbed my bags after being at home only one night and jumping in the car on the way to the next festival. I thought to myself, so many people wouldn’t like the idea of rarely spending a night at home but I love being able to live out of my suitcase and performing at so many places.’

Melissa releases her latest single Luckiest Girl on NfS 117 this month and CMC will air the clip shortly.

It’s sometimes difficult to appreciate the effort that goes into getting a single out.  For Melissa writing the song, working with an experienced music producer like Lindsay Butler to see it come to life, and eventually getting to work with one of Australia’s most awarded video producers ON her birthday makes you wonder about the ironies of life.

It’s the stuff that creates memories forever.

MEDIA RELEASE

Melissa Bajric Hunter Valley’s Small Town Girl

Melissa Bajric was raised in a small village near the vineyard regions of the Hunter Valley in NSW.

Her first album ‘Believe In Me’ released in August 2001 was a dream come true.  It first earned three awards Best New Talent, Junior Career and Paul McLeod Encouragement Award in the 2001 Australian Independent Country Artists Awards in Sydney later that year and picked up the 2002 Australian Independent Country Artist's ‘Spirit of Tamworth’ project - Luke Newland Best New Country Talent Award the next year.

In August 2003 Melissa teamed with Bob Easter and Graham Rodger to release the popular duet album ‘Drovin’ All Over’.  This album like ‘Believe In Me’ received instant radio airplay right across Australia.

Two years later she recorded at LBS studios in Tamworth.  Produced by Lindsay Butler and released on the Drover Label Melissa’s second album ‘Small Town Girl’ with five of her own songs was launched during January’s 2006 Tamworth Festival.

‘Some of those I wrote very recently’ she said at the time.

‘Luckiest Girl’ was written after I had started recording. I had put down a few songs already and was taking a break and touring on the festival circuit.’ Melissa said.

‘You’d get home from one festival turn around twice and jump back in the car to get to the next festival’ she said. ‘I wrote Luckiest Girl between my house and the first service station.’

‘We live in a little town with a local pub, a corner shop and a service station. That’s it.  There was a time when you could walk down the street and you would know everybody. That’s starting to change. There are a lot of new houses going up, new people moving in, new attitudes, more distance. I felt a bit like a stranger in my own town.  I wanted to write a song to capture that small town attitude before it disappears so I wrote Small Town Girl.’

Pretty twenty-one year old MELISSA BAJRIC has been making her way in the Bush Ballad genre since her early teens.  Unlike some young performers she isn’t confused musically she knows exactly what direction her music is taking her.  I’m always going to stay true to the Bush Ballad style," she said adamantly. ‘But it’s also nice to explore the other sides of county music. I do try to stay as traditional as possible, but there’s more to traditional country music than just Bush Ballads.’
